Today there was a special delivery at the Treehaus: a small, but sort of heavy cardboard box filled with goodies from Darn Tough.

The socks I received are the In-Country Series seen here. Depending on which size fits me, I’ll have a giveaway for the other two pair at some point in the near future.  And if you want a Darn Tough sticker I have plenty, so email me at with your mailing addy and I’ll send one out.

I’ve never worn Darn Tough socks before and am very excited to see how tough they really are and especially if they are as comfortable as Smartwools.  More soon.

  1. I saw Brad in December. He asked me if I wear SmartWool socks and told me about this site. In fact, I do wear a lot of SmartWool socks (they’re my favorites though pricey so I only buy a pair or two a year). Many of my friends also wear them.

I have never had a problem with any of my SmartWool socks. I have worn them for years and not even one sock has ever worn out. I still own other socks, but only wear them reluctantly.

I do walk a lot, and always wear a pedometer, though admittedly I bike a lit of places, which doesn’t exactly put stress on my socks. Even when I’m not hiking, I’ll walk 10 – 30,000 steps a day easily. Perhaps it helps that my feet are at the small end of the medium size range, so the socks are plenty roomy. But still, I don’t even have any threadbare pairs of SmartWool socks. Perhaps I have too many pairs and rotate my socks more than some? But I know I have a couple of pairs that I wear every week and have used for three years already. Also, the weather here is mild so I wear socks at least 80% of the year. Go figure.

I’m wondering about the soft water factor. I just put my socks right in the washer and dryer. I always wash everything in cold water, and we have extremely soft water in Portland. I don’t know if that is a factor.

I asked around in Portland and haven’t found anyone who has had a problem with their SmartWool socks being short lived.

It would be interesting to see if the socks wear out faster in hard water locales?

Have fun with your inquiry. As long as I live wear I do and my SmartWool socks keep performing well for me, I plan to stick with them. But maybe I shouldn’t move>
